Why I Don’t Have a ‘Niche’ - And Why That Matters to You
You might have noticed that some therapists talk about their “niche”- one type of problem, one type of client, one neat category. It can be great for marketing, but personally it just isn't who I am as a therapist. The truth is, most people’s lives don't fit neatly into one box, so I believe therapy shouldn’t either.
Someone might be experiencing insomnia linked to past trauma or a long-term health condition. Another person may be facing low self-esteem during the menopause transition. Someone else might be coping with OCD that developed as a response to trauma, or social anxiety connected to a skin condition.
These are all very different experiences, yet they all share one thing in common: they are complex, personal, and unique. That’s why I work with you as an individual, with your own unique combination of challenges, goals, and strengths.
Why CBT Works Across So Many Challenges
One of the reasons I love being a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist is that the training I received provided me with robust skills that are flexible and effective for so many different difficulties. The connecting themes between most conditions are the beliefs we hold about ourselves, other people, and the world around us. These beliefs shape how we interpret situations, how we respond to others, and even how we treat ourselves.
CBT helps you identify these beliefs, understand how they influence your thoughts and behaviours, and develop new ways of responding that feel more helpful and empowering. That’s why it works for everything from anxiety, low self-esteem, and trauma, to insomnia, OCD, and social anxiety. There are several techniques that are used across conditions, but the way we apply them is entirely personalised to you and your presentation. Some therapists rigidly follow set protocols but I have found that in some cases, doing this means crucial symptoms are missed and left untreated.
That's why I use a flexible, transdiagnostic approach to ensure you're getting everything you need from your sessions. Together, we focus on the patterns that are most important in your life and work on strategies that really make a difference. Because my goal is to meet the whole person sitting in front of me- not simply a diagnosis or a label. Your life, your experiences, and your needs are what guide our work together. That’s my ‘niche,’ and it’s why I LOVE what I do.
